It is said that everyone in Vermont knows a farmer or is a farmer. That was true in 1775, when Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys won the Battle of Ticonderoga in America’s War of Independence, and it’s true today.

Vermont is the second smallest state in the Union, measuring only 160 by 80 miles with a population under 650,000.  The state capital, Montpelier, has 9,000 residents and no McDonald’s. There are more covered bridges and organic farms than billboards, because billboards are outlawed.

Locals like it that way … Vermont is consistently ranked among the top states for happiness, good health and intelligence. The state motto could be Take A Hike -- three-quarters of the state is forest. But forget about taking a snow day because school and work are never canceled when it snows.
